It is undeniable that music has been a bedrock component of African American
culture. African Americans have excelled at creating and performing popular
forms and styles of music, and these contributions are deeply woven into our

households are spending an approximate $12 billion per year on entertainment
related goods and services, including recorded and downloaded music and
music-influenced merchandise. Despite our creative and economic positioning
as prolific musical artists and hungry consumers for music industry products,
smooth-talking scouts and agents, opportunistic talent managers, and
controlling record company executives abound and prey upon emerging and
established African American artists and musicians.
